The museum is situated within Defence Centre - Adelaide's Keswick Barracks. The Barracks were established in 1912 when the Army moved from North Terrace, Adelaide, to a fringe parklands area at Keswick. The Town is on a 20 acre site which houses ninety buildings laid out in an old town setting. It includes eleven streets, a railway line with fourteen carriages and a station. The shops, houses and public building are furnished from 1880 to 1950. Visitors feel they have stepped into the past from the present day.

The Military Vehicle Collectors Society of South Australia Inc was formed in 1976, and opened their Museum in 1993.
