The Museum is a branch of the Western Australian Museum. It is housed in a modern building dominated by a massive mining headframe attached to an old hotel - all within botanical gardens - containing genuine and replica buildings showing aspects of goldfields life. The exhibitions change regularly and include travelling displays from across Australia. The emphasis is on the period of the gold rush (1893) and its effect on the region's social structure and ecology. In 1863 the first school between Perth and Freemantle was built on Freshwater Bay. This building now forms the core of the museum site, which opened in 1975. Exhibits are changed periodically and address issues related to the loacl history of Claremont. The museum collects and preserves material culture associated with the district of Claremont, including oral histories and photographs. The Museum has a collection of items relating to the local history of the the districts within the City of Belmont and resides in a purpose-built building, in early colonial style. The collections cover household items and early industries, with a special interest in horse racing. "Hands-on" activities are provided for school groups, which involves the use of early days equipment.approx. 600 photographs covering all aspects of the life and times of citizens - buildings of the area, items of everyday use in home, work and play.
The museum houses showcases which tell the history of early pioneers of Mandurah. A lifesize model of a Megamouth Shark (the original is in the WA museum) found on local beach is also on display. A schoolroom of early days is shown through a display of the original school, incorporated in the museum building. The Kojonup Historical Society have been given the responsibility of two major historical buildings in Kojonup. The military barracks, built by the 51st regiment in 1845 as a military outpost, is now a museum featuring the building's past as the outpost, a school and a private residence. The building is the first permanent Courthouse in the Eastern Goldfields. It is part of the block of government buildings which is comprised of the Courthouse, Mining Registrar Offices and residences, Post Office and Residences. Construction commenced in 1892. The foundations are of local stone cemented together with mud. The walls are of locally made mud bricks.

Hartley Street School was opened in 1930 as a small two-roomed school. It was extended in 1940 by an additional room and verandah, and in 1945 an octagonal room and classroom were added. Housed in a historic 110yr old building, this museum contains photographs of development in the Northern Territory, Chinese relics, minerals, war years, communications, mining and social history. Built in 1907-08, this building served as the town's gaol until 1938. Stuart Town Gaol was the town's first official building. Although it is architecturally simple in style, its use of local materials if of great importance. The floor plan and fittings reflect the harsh discriminatory treatment of prisoners during the time of its use. The display focus is on the history of law and order in Central Australia and the conditions under which prisoners were kept until 1938.
