The museum complex comprises four main buildings, an entrance and parcels office circa 1923; signal box with 95 levers circa 1913; ladies and men's waiting rooms circa 1917; and a refreshment room and bar circa 1923 with bar circa 1906. Main collection areas are the railway history of the Merredin area; Merredin's social, agricultural, mining and war (1939-45) history; and a large doll collection. Displays include period settings, repair workshops, posters and other memorabilia with over 120 painstakingly restored cars, bikes, unusual and performance vehicles. Located at the heart of picturesque Whiteman Park, the museum has ample parking delightful lakeside picnic and BBQ facilities and only 18 minutes from Perth.Collection includes possibly the oldest car in western Australia, 1898 Benz and many special display of early motoring in Western Australia. We are continually changing our displays at a rate of approx 3 vehicles per week.
The museum displays a steam engine dating from 1950, carriages from 1899 and 1915, carts and other transport related objects in the town's original train station. The museum reflects the significant role the railway played in the development of the town and goldfields, connecting Coolgardie to Perth from 1986 until its closure in 1971. The station building was designed by George Temple Poole and constructed in local pink stone in the 1890s.A small collection relating to transport and communication, featuring a steam engine and carriages as well as horse drawn vehicles.
The museum's major exhibit is a B-52 bomber. Other exhibits include the wreckage of the first Zero shot down over Australian soil, Mirage and Sabre jets, B-52 Mitchell, Wessex helicopter, Spitfire replica and a number of civil aircraft and ultralights. There are displays of aircraft engines, armament, photos and memorabilia depicting the history of aviation in the Northern Territory from the early record breaking flights through to the jet age.
