Historic Display

The Museum holds a collection of artefacts from the Old World, from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. These include decorative pottery and terracotta, glassware, coins, bronze work, stone carving, oil lamps and writing materials from ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and the Near East; a large scale model of the ancient city of Athens; and a collection of cast replicas of classical statues.Estimated 800 artefacts, plus approximately 1,500 coins
The owner, Miss Crouch, spent 26 years in Papua New Guinea in medical work. She shares something of this experience with visitors to the Centre. The Display Centre is her own property. As well as fossils and artefacts from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea the display includes rocks and minerals from many parts of the world. Donations made are sent towards medical work in Papua New Guinea.
Wheel righting, forge welding and blacksmithing were undertaken in this workshop by the Excell family. The workshop is complete in its original state from the 1905 and 1935 era. Objects in the workshop include an original D.C welder, forge, wheelwright section, upsetting machine, and the Brattenizing Plough, patented and built by Excell in Tumby Bay and widely used in South Australia.200 items
The very down to earth "lived with", hands-on centre contains many historical papers, photos, articles and a beautiful "Plangon" doll collection. The collections are housed in several rooms with the themes of: tools; the community; ladies; boats; kitchen and dining; school, war and hospital; and dolls.200-300 items, plus 200-300 photographs
This historical building holds a collection of local history items and memorabilia relating to whaling, fishing, agriculture and social history. A blacksmith shop is part of the complex, with the upstairs furnished in 1890s style.
The enginehouse has been fully restored (1986), apart from the original engine. A scale model (1:16) is fully operational and explained by guides. Videos (x3) provide further relevant information as do information boards on all three floors. Walks outside include; via a restored adit into the retimbered shaft, access to Morphett's Windinghouse, pool, mine offices and cottages, Grave's enginehouse and view of open-cut mine.Model and information boards mentioned above. The waterwheel, manufactured in Salisbury, was originally used on the Little Para River to pump water to irrigate a citrus orchard. It operated from 1911 to 1914, when it was abandoned. The Salisbury Rotary Club restored it and it is now housed in its own building. Associated with this is an historic display of the citrus industry which flourished in Salisbury from 1870 to 1950.
A magnificent Northern French Romanesque building. Built in 1866 as the Baptist Church with two floors. Building former East Torrens Council Chambers built in 1902-3. Collection - artifacts relating to local fruit growing and market gardening industries and families. Occasional special displays are mounted.
The museum's focus is on railway siganlling & safe working, telegraphic communications, aviation communications & navigation, and aviation pioneers, particularly of South Australia. The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia is located in the State Library of South Australia on North Terrace, Adelaide. Founded in 1885 to further the exploration of South Australia, today the society's emphasis is on the natural and cultural environment. Bluey Blundstone's Blacksmith shop was built in 1865 in Melrose, South Australia. Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, first settled with the discovery of copper in 1846. This is just 10 years after South Australia was proclaimed a state. The museum is a National Trust property. It is located on the remains of the Bon Accord Mine site and incorporates the original mine office and workshop (c1859) The Bon Accord Mine commenced operations in 1846 and ceased in 1863. There were many years of inactivity during this period as no payable copper deposits were found. A specialised collection relating to exploration in the South Pacific. The building constructed in 1954 with some 26,000 hand made bricks brought from the convict kiln at Variety Bay, North Bruny Island. The display in the foyer of the headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) contains artefacts from the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. The focus is on Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) from 1947 onwards and current Antarctic research. The AAD manages Australian government activity in Antarctica, provides transport and logistic support, maintains the four permanent Australian research stations, and conducts and manages scientific research programs both on land and in the Southern Ocean.
The Hamilton Heritage Centre is a small, local interest museum consisting of photographs and artefacts of the area.
