To experience the outback, head to Broken Hill! Surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of forbidding arid terrain, Broken Hill was once the town of mining giant Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP). The richest silver, lead and zinc deposit in the world, for which the town was founded, is still being mined there.

Broken Hill is also an important service town for the people who live on isolated stations in the surrounding country. The School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service both operate from Broken Hill, along with the mail plane which delivers mail to outback stations weekly. Visitors can take a day trip with the plane for a rare insight into the sheer size and sense of space of the area, as well as its spectacular geography

Louth

Louth is located in the Far North West of New South Wales on the banks of the Darling River. This normally quiet town is set in the deep red Outback sands with giant river gums towering over the grassy riverbanks. Such is its beauty that visitors have been known to set up home along the river and stay for months. The Louth Outback Races is an event that swells the population to over one hundred times its size to enjoy the carnival.

Menindee

Menindee is located 1106 km north-west of Sydney via the Great Western, Mitchell and Barrier Highways. Although the flat arid land barely supports grazing, the town is surrounded by citrus orchards and vegetable cultivation that are irrigated from the lakes formed from the Darling river.

Menindee is one of the best freshwater fishing spots in NSW with Murray cod, golden perch, silver perch, European carp, crayfish and catfish in abundant supply.
